OLYMPIA – A new secretary of state, a concession in the U.S. Senate race and a congressional seat still too close to call.

Not much changed between the primary and general elections for Pend Oreille County auditor as incumbent Marianne Nichols retained her seat for a fifth term, beating challenger Tamara Newman.

Most of Washington's Congressional incumbents prevailed in Tuesday's general election, but a few districts may still hold some surprises as more votes are counted in the coming days.

OLYMPIA – Democrats continue to lead in some of Washington’s most competitive legislative districts to keep their majorities in the state House and Senate, although Republicans are making gains with Wednesday’s vote tally.

Maggie Yates has conceded to Al French, Bob McCaslin is chipping away at Vicky Dalton's lead and Leonard Christian's odds of upsetting Rob Chase look increasingly good. 

Spokane voters inched Wednesday toward shooting down a measure that would give lawmakers more authority over the city attorney.

Biviano's percentage of the vote fell to 51.3% after votes were tallied Wednesday, but the vote margin against Crull increased to a little more than 4,500 votes countywide. Both candidates said Wednesday night they were waiting for additional returns, with an estimated 20,000 ballots left to count countywide as of Wednesday.

Election night results show big gaps between candidates in closely contested prosecutor and coroner races in Stevens County, but many ballots are left to be counted.

At his election night party Tuesday, Kevin McCarthy was heralded as the next speaker of the House. But Republicans on Wednesday found little to celebrate as disappointing results rolled in from battleground districts across the country and the much-touted red wave failed to materialize.

 Former President Donald Trump's dominant role looks to have limited the Republican Party's ability to take full advantage of a midterm election opportunity. But Trump's demonstrated inability to walk away quietly could hamstring the party for the next two years and beyond as he continues to exercise outsized sway over the GOP base. 

WASHINGTON – Republicans were inching closer to a majority in the House of Representatives as Election Day came to a close, but control of the Senate was still up in the air Tuesday night – likely to be decided in the coming days by a handful of tight races – as Democrats avoided the shellacking some had predicted.

More ballots will be counted in the coming days, so the exact results of the race are likely to change. County auditors were anticipating a later-than-normal surge in voting, meaning it could be the end of this week or early next before most ballots are counted.

BELLEVUE – Democratic incumbent Steve Hobbs is leading in the race for secretary of state, although nonpartisan opponent Julie Anderson is not far behind.

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers is headed to her 10th term in Congress, as Tuesday night's return show voters in Eastern Washington favored her over Democratic challenger Natasha Hill. 

Democratic incumbent Vicky Dalton is up by 4 percentage points in the race for Spokane County auditor, but if the results of the August primary election are any indication, the race is far from over.

The race quickly became one of the most expensive and closely watched in recent history. 

Incumbent Spokane County Prosecutor Larry Haskell won a third term in Tuesday’s election.

The measure would give city lawmakers more control over launching litigation and firing the attorney in charge at Spokane City Hall. 

A three-tenths of 1% sales tax to fund Airway Height's transportation benefit district was passing after Tuesday night's returns, with 57.2% of the vote. The district was approved by voters in November 2013, and the city said it needed to extend the tax and increase it by one-tenth of 1% to pay for needed infrastructure as the city continues to grow.
