‘A Christmas bow’: Realtor’s recent find of Spokane relatives includes housekeeper of 16 years

Thanks to an ancestry app, Marianne Bornhoft can claim the gift of Christmas cousins this year, closer than she could have imagined. For 16 years, she has employed the same housekeeper, Lyndia Danielson. After her mother's death on Oct. 18, Bornhoft felt a tug to look on 23andMe and saw Danielson's name, DNA-matched as a cousin. Neither of them knew. Bornhoft had a similar experience soon after her dad Ray Senn died in 2019, when she found Jennifer Hultquist, who also works in real estate. Another agent had said Hultquist and Bornhoft were likely cousins, but Bornhoft at first shrugged it off. She later texted Hultquist, who confirmed they're cousins.

Book review: A pioneering Black author’s novel takes us to a Wakanda-like civilization

Pauline Hopkins’ “Of One Blood,” first published in 1903 as a serial in Colored American Magazine, reappears now as a paperback, with highly stylized cover art, in Joshua Glenn’s admirable “Radium Age” series devoted to early-20th-century science fiction and fantasy. Previous “Radium Age” titles, all published by MIT Press, include J.D. Beresford’s “A World of Women” (1913), E.V. Odle’s “The Clockwork Man” (1923) and J.J. Connington’s “Nordenholt’s Million” (1923). I’ve read all three and highly recommend them.

Dear Annie 12/24

Dear Annie: I’m writing to you because I need advice on my relationship with my older sister. I’m in my 50s, and she’s eight years older. She and her husband have no children. My husband and I have a son and daughter, both young adults. Our parents and brother have all passed, so it’s just the two of us now in our immediate family.

Ask the doctors 12/24

Dear Doctors: We had to throw away some sliced turkey from the deli because of a listeria recall. We had used some of it to make sandwiches, but fortunately no one in the family got sick. What is listeria? What happens when someone gets sick from it?

Miss Manners 12/23

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My husband and I were housesitting for friends in a town that was a short drive from his sister, “Lacey,” and brother-in-law, “Tuck.” We invited them to come over for dinner one evening, which they did. I didn’t know them well, but I had heard that Tuck was volatile and argumentative.

Dear Annie 12/22

Dear Annie: My husband and I love each other very much, but we have grown apart for a while now. I’ve done my best to be a good and loving wife, yet it seems to be hard for him to give me physical affection. He says he loves me and doesn’t want to be without me, yet we are very physically distant.

Christmas magic continues courtesy of The Illusionists

UPDATED: Thu., Dec. 22, 2022

There are a number of types of magicians and it seems as if each sort of prestidigitator will be on hand Monday at the First Interstate Center for the Arts. The Illusionists, a touring magic production which features a rotating cast of five to eight magicians, will perform. Each entertainer specializes in specific branches of magic, from stage illusions and mind reading to escapology to comedic magic.

Ask the doctors 12/22

Dear Doctors: My husband has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. One of his doctors says that when someone has RA, there’s a higher risk of cognitive impairment. He also said that some of the newer medications can keep that from happening. I would like to know more about that.
