WA has high number of homeless students, gets lowest federal funding

Washington state has one of the largest homeless student populations in the country — 40,000 just prior to the pandemic. Yet, Washington school districts in the 2018-19 school year received an average of $29 per homeless student from one of the main federal funds for homeless students to pay for transportation, books, extracurriculars or any other need they can't afford.

Son of Spokane man with mesothelioma awarded $5 million by jury in Volkswagen asbestos case

Tony Sorrentino worked on brakes and clutches at United Volkswagen Inc. from 1971 to 1974, using a tool called an arc grinder to shape drum brakes before installing them on cars, according to a complaint filed in King County in January 2021. Grinding the brakes produced dust containing asbestos that Sorrentino inhaled during the roughly 700 brake jobs he performed on Volkswagen vehicles, according to the lawsuit.

Spokane VA has reduced staff despite ongoing effects of troubled computer system as veterans wait longer for care

More than two years after its launch in Spokane, employees at Mann-Grandstaff say the system has exacerbated staffing problems, pushing people like Bank to leave key roles and making hiring more difficult. The hospital’s decreased capacity has left more veterans to seek care in the private sector, which can mean longer wait times and higher costs to the taxpayers who fund VA care.
