‘Good dog’: Firefighting Labrador retriever Mako dies after prolific career in Spokane Valley

Mako the arson dog, who dedicated years of his life to investigating fires in the Northwest and worked even after he had officially hung up his badge, died earlier this month. He was almost 14 years old.

Spokane Fire Department urges property owners to check their pipes as deep freeze comes to an end

Firefighters responded to more than 60 calls of damaged pipes or broken sprinklers over the weekend, according to a news release Monday. The department urged people who have been out-of-the-office over the holidays to check offices, shops and warehouses for standing water.

Son of Spokane man with mesothelioma awarded $5 million by jury in Volkswagen asbestos case

Tony Sorrentino worked on brakes and clutches at United Volkswagen Inc. from 1971 to 1974, using a tool called an arc grinder to shape drum brakes before installing them on cars, according to a complaint filed in King County in January 2021. Grinding the brakes produced dust containing asbestos that Sorrentino inhaled during the roughly 700 brake jobs he performed on Volkswagen vehicles, according to the lawsuit.
