Our Lady of Lourdes Academy was the first of many Catholic schools associated with a parish church. And it was involved in a major consolidation in 1972, combining six parochial schools into two.

The Riverfront Park Pavilion was erected as the U.S. Pavilion and centerpiece of the World's Fair. The tent-like structure covered a 850-seat theater, exhibits and offices.

The first public school designed for high school-aged students only was Spokane High School, completed in 1891.

Gonzaga University's College Hall, completed in 1898, was constructed to accommodate the rapidly growing student and faculty population outgrew the school's original 1887 building.

The 1915 brick building at 707 E. Mission Avenue, and seen in a 1926 photo, was the monastery of the Poor Clares, an order of nuns who spend much of their time in prayer and contemplation. Today, the site is a 99-unit subsidized apartment block called the O'Malley Apartments.

Once the state of Washington decided to fund state highways in the early 1900s, construction began in earnest.

Spokane's Felts Field has a long and storied history. Aside from daring pilots, air races and historic firsts, it was an important link on early air mail routes through the region.

Brothers Charles H. Sandifur and C. Paul Sandifur arrived in Spokane around 1937 and went into the car business. They parlayed that success into finance giant Metropolitan Mortgage, which went bankrupt in 2004.

Glover Field was Spokane's first city-owned, multi-sport stadium. It was conveniently located near the downtown core.

The newest Howard Street Bridge, opened in 2018, is in Riverfront Park on the south channel of the Spokane River. But there are three different Howard Street bridges that complete the route from the south bank to the north bank of the river. The first Howard Street Bridge was a wooden bridge over the south channel.

Transportation was changing rapidly in the 1920s. Horse power was being superseded by gas engines, modern buses were challenging regional railroads and taxis and rental cars were making city travel easier. And businessman W.C. Nichols was on the leading edge of these changes.

Historians have called Spokane's California House, built in 1878, the city's first hotel. The building was destroyed in Spokane's great fire in 1889.

The southwest corner at the intersection of Riverside Avenue and Stevens Street had a men's clothing shop in the Fernwell Building for a century.

Now over 130 years old, the Review Tower is an enduring symbol of city's early newspapers. It was built for the Spokane Falls Review, which combined with The Spokesman in a merger designed to save both struggling newspapers.

There was a modest residence hotel at 811 W. Riverside Avenue from around 1900 to the late 1960s that was named similarly to a historic Seattle hotel of the era, but it likely had no relationship to it. The ground floor below the Rainier Grand Hotel was the first home to a pair of successful retail establishments.

A three-story lodging house stood at the northeast corner of Third Avenue and Lincoln Street from 1907 until 1966. At first it was called Hotel 223, but the name was too cryptic for many visitors so the operator, Phoebe B. Cox, changed the name to Hotel Butler.

A full-service auto shop operated on the corner of Browne Street and Main Avenue from 1913 to 1964, passing through several owners in its 50-plus years. It was a replaced by a Goodyear tire store. Today, the site is the Main Market Coop.
